Costa Rica Adventure: Vol. 11 – Red Movement
Tell us about the Red Movement? Who are you/ What do you do/ What do you represent?
Beginning in 2014, we are a team from Dallas, TX who comes to Jaco annually to love and serve the people by playing sports with the locals, help restore homes in the river to make them safer for those living in them, and lastly we help artisans sell their work in the States.
Who is your team and how has this movement affected them? We’re made up of mainly high school student athletes that volunteer their time. It has taught them much about generosity, serving, giving, loving, and a whole lot of other things that they don’t get at home in the same type of way. Living in a river and having to battle rain and dirt is new for my team to see. It helps us learn how to be cognizant of others and desire to want to make an impact.

What were you doing to help the communities that your reached out to this year? We restored an entire roof, build a sidewalk for the river community so the rain water could get washed away and not turn into mud, we poured cement for floors (that were dirt prior to our arrival) of six homes.
What was the communities reaction to the experience before and after?
I believe they are thankful. I know many other groups come to help them and we want to be consistent.
Any particular moments of profound thought that arose from your experience?
Some of the people who have the least still have so much joy.
What’s next for the Red Movement?
We want to slowly keep working on homes in Jaco, play sports with the people, and keep supporting the artisans we have and any others that come along the way.

Do you have a motto that you try to live by?
Go small. In the states, everyone says ‘go big or go home.’ Our motto is ‘go small.’ One person, one home, one artisan, one relationship at a time. We can still be effective.
I believe there were some fear of heights conquered!
How did you find out about Ocean Ranch Park and what adventure activities did you do?
Hotel Club Del Mar. We did ATV, Waterfall Rappelling, and the canopy zip line.
What was your favorite experience? Any specific moment of bliss, beauty, clarity, or adrenaline that awakened your senses?
We thoroughly enjoyed splashing through puddles on the ATV’s and not knowing how deep they’d be. I enjoyed zip lining simply because I could see all the scenery around me. It’s neat to see more of the tropical forest.
Did your team conquer any fears while you were at Ocean Ranch Park?
I believe there were some fear of heights conquered!
What do you love most about Costa Rica?
The people, they are so sweet and kind. I love the people.
What’s your favorite place to go in Jaco, Costa Rica?
The Taco Joint. That place is good!
Did you travel anywhere else in Costa Rica?
The Paos Volcano & The La Paz Waterfall Gardens are awesome!!!!!
What’s your best tip for travel?
Ask the locals. They know their city better than any website or travel guide!
